DENTURE MAINTANANCE

Looking after your smile

Your dentures should be checked on an annual basis to ensure optimum fit and comfort. As well as to check your oral health and if there's any changes in your mouth including your gums and tongue.

As with natural teeth, plaque tends to form around the teeth and you may experience profound denture odours. Therefore it is very important to clean your dentures on a daily bases as your health could be at risk. Looking after your gums is just important as looking after your Dentures. Red and swollen gums, that bleeds when brushing, could be a sign of gum disease.

CLEANING YOUR DENTURES

How do you care for your denture?

  • A denture is fragile, so it is important to handle it with care.
  • Clean your dentures at least twice a day, preferably after each meal.
  • Remove your dentures from your mouth to clean them effectively.
  • Always clean your dentures over a basin filled with water to prevent it from breaking when slipping out of your hands.
  • Using a soft bristle denture brush specifically designed for cleaning dentures and a special denture cream to gently remove any debris that has collected on the service of the denture. Pay particular attention to the fitting or underside of the denture.
  • If you are wearing a partial denture, be sure to remove it before brushing your natural teeth.
  • Important to remove any kind of denture adhesives daily to avoid bone loss.
  • Brush your gums, tongue and palate at least twice a day when dentures are removed, as this will also stimulate circulation to the gums.
  • You can also use a mouth wash to promote a fresh breath.

Should dentures be worn over night?

Wear your new denture almost constantly during the first month – even while you sleep. Afterwards under normal circumstances it is considered best to remove your denture at night. Research has shown that by removing the denture for at least 4 hours a day, allows the gum tissue to rest and allows normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. This promotes circulation and better long-term health of the gums and reduced bone loss.

AVOID THE FOLLOWING

  • Do not hold dentures over an empty basin or hard tiled floor to prevent it from breaking when slipping out of your hands.
  • Don't use a harsh scrubbing action as this may adversely wear the polished surface of the denture. You might not see those microscopic scratches, but they are a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Do not scrape the denture with sharp knives or nail files, as this will only lead to more intense staining and the growing of odour, causing bacteria that grow in the scratches.
  • Don't attempt to adjust the denture yourself as it will lead to mal function of the denture.
  • Never use household cleaning products like bleach, as it can be harmful to your health and it will shorten the life of your denture.
  • Don't sterilize your denture with boiling water, because it will cause the denture to wrap and it might crack.
  • Don't leave lower dentures or small partial dentures in at night while you sleep, as they are possible to swallow.
  • Don't use regular tooth paste as it is to abrasive and will eventually thin out the acrylic base and cause premature wear and breakage.

CONTINUE SEEING YOUR CLINICAL DENTAL TECHNICIAN REGULARLY

It is important to continue having regular dental checkups so that we may examine the oral tissues. As you age, your mouth will continue to change as the bone under your denture shrinks or recedes. To maintain a proper fit over time, it may become necessary to adjust or possibly reline your denture. Never attempt to adjust your denture yourself and do not use denture adhesives for a prolonged period as it can contribute to bone loss. - For further information and advice or to book an appointment – contact us or make an online booking.

CLEANING PRODUCTS

A wide selection of denture cleaning products is available from Denturist Studio. We recommend the use a soft Denture brush to clean your denture, as ordinary tooth brushes are to hard and may damage or scratch your denture. Use a denture cleaner or paste, such as Polident Denture Cream as conventional toothpastes such as Colgate are to abrasive and will eventually thin out the acrylic base or causing premature wear and breakage.

When fitted with new dentures, you may expect a few pressure points and sore spots to develop, but don't persevere, call us and arrange to come in for an adjustment.
